Modern society is under the influence of social media. There are events happening because of the social media and directly affecting the behavior of the individual. Social media is an ideal platform for the development of social communication, making it more accessible and interactive via web-based technologies. Although new media tools, including the electronic information sites, social networks, blogs, microblogs and forums create opportunities for people to communicate with each other and exchange information, they also have some negative sides. Anyone who has access to an electronic medium can now deliver their content to a wider audience. Such a form of communication in society often leads to the circulation of false information, misdirecting the mass audience, and deteriorating the psychological state of young people. Purpose. The purpose of this study about social media and society is to analyze the effects of social media on society, as well as the analysis of fake news and other negative situations spread through social networks. The article provides information on the impact of social media on the psychological state of an individual, the behavior of users on social media platforms, the problem of "fake news” and ways to address these challenges. The power of influence of social media users on each other and the extent to which this influence directs their behavior have been presented by concrete facts. The study also lists the consequences of sharing personal information (correspondence, geolocation, financial transactions) on social media and provides information on ways to prevent it. The research also includes findings of the surveys on the behavior of people in social media.. Methodology. In the course of the research, observation and comparative analysis method was used. and a questionnaire was used to test the hypotheses. Universe and sample. The scope of the article covers social media in general. The sample of the research is social media users. Results. As a conclusion of the research, a number of results were obtained. Among these results, what negative trends are going on in the society affected by social media is reflected. As well as the impact of social media on information dissemination, proliferation of disinformation, information pollution, processing of repeated information are explained in detail in the conclusion.
